An unfortunate motorcycle accident in Manhattan claimed the life of the rider and left many witnesses aghast. The accident occurred in the SoHo district of New York City last week, and it appears that the motorcycle may have been victimized by a hit-and-run driver. The police said they didn’t know who struck the motorcyclist, and yet one witness said that the motorcyclist was “hit” by something. The police are investigating the matter.
In the wake of the tragedy, witnesses took to Twitter, posting small snippets on the social media site describing the accident and the scene in general. Most of the Twitter talk referred to a “horrifying” scene.
What’s sad about this accident — other than the fact that someone lost their life in a seemingly needless accident — is that Tweet talking about a horrifying scene, as if this motorcycle accident is worse than others. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Motorcyclists are inherently in a very vulnerable position; and when they get into an accident, there is a good chance they will be seriously injured or killed. It is sad, but it is reality.
Motorcyclists need to do everything they can to protect themselves when they are on their vehicle. Wear a helmet; operate your vehicle safely; you could even attach a little camera to your bike to record your travels, just in case you get into an accident and the other driver disputes your claims or tries to lie about their involvement or responsibility in the accident.
In the meantime, the family of the victim in this motorcycle accident will await the results of the investigation. If a negligent driver is found or determined to be at fault for the wreck, the family could sue for wrongful death.
